The team qualified to compete in the Dutchess-Ulster-Sullivan-Orange (DUSO) Math League Sectional Championship, which was held on March 8 at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie and placed sixth out of twenty teams. Michele Loebbaka was also selected to compete at States on April 22 in Ithaca.
These mathletes take on solving highly complex math problems by using the “tools” of trigonometry, calculus, geometry, probability, and algebra. During the first part of the competition, students were required to complete a number of problems within a certain time limit. The second part included a relay round, which had teammates completing portions of a problem and passing it along to the next person to complete.
Afterwards, everyone was invited to listen to the guest speaker, Vassar Math teacher Andy Borum. He discussed how and why he became a Math teacher and what he is currently researching.
So what is the common denominator of these mathletes? They all love flexing their brains!
Congratulations to members of Team A:
Michele Loebbaka
